Area nursing homes receive mixed reviews.

Government rates care in facilities nationwide.

The federal government is offering a tool for people facing the daunting task of finding the right nursing home for their loved ones.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has compiled an in-depth accounting of the quality of care offered at all 17,000 public and private nursing homes across the country that are certified to receive Medicare and Medicaid funding.
Locally, the nursing homes received mixed reviews.
One Manor Care Health Services facility in Bethleham had 16 "deficiencies" on inspections, including four documenting actual harm to patients  for failing to prevent bedsores and failing to assure that each resident was being watched and had devices to prevent injury.
The Valley View Health Care Center in Frenchtown also had 16 deficiencies, including two that resulted in "immediate jeopardy to resident health or safety"  for failing to monitor residents and failing to administer the home to provide the highest quality of life for residents.
The large public nursing homes in Northampton, Lehigh and Warren counties all had at least one failed inspection that resulted in actual harm to patients.
Cedarbrook, the Lehigh County Home, had eight deficiencies, including three that resulted in actual harm for failing to give enough fluids, for failing to monitor residents and provide assistive devices, and for failing to prevent bedsores.
The list - which is available online at www.medicare.gov - compiles the results of recent inspections and compares several treatments of local residents against state and federal standards. For more information, please visit www.medicare.gov/NHCompare/Home.asp .

Nursing Facility Earns Deficiency Free Status:

Califon - August 5, 2002-- As nursing homes come under great scrutiny, there is one that continues to provide a high level of care and service.  Little Brook Nursing and Convalescent Home, located on Sliker Road in Califon, recently completed their annual Federal and State Surveys and was found to be deficiency free.  The State of New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services conducts the survey in nursing homes.  The annual survey is conducted to determine compliance with Federal and State regulations governing areas such as quality of care, residents' rights, confidentiality and quality of service.  It is an intense review of performance and compliance by the provider and is a quality indicator for individuals and families facing placement decisions.  When asked what was the most important factor in attaining this distinction, Jim and Joye Lindes, owners and operators, agreed that quality care and service begins and ends with quality people.  The deficiency free survey is a tribute to our staff and each member's commitment and dedication to our residents, regardless of their role or work schedule.  It's a privilege and honor to be a part of this team.  For further information, call 908.832.2220 or visit the web site at www.littlebrooknursinghome.com
